Abbey Stadium Statement
29 January 2009
Cllr Carole Gandy, Leader of the Council, said: “Choosing to defer the Abbey Stadium project has been one of the most difficult decisions that we have had to take, but nobody can take responsibility for the current world-wide economic situation.
“The biggest surprise when we took control of this council was that there was not a single penny put aside for this scheme. And we could not go ahead with this project at this time when there is still no guarantee that we will be able to fund it.
“We still believe that a sports development on the Abbey Stadium site is vital to the borough, but we have no alternative but to defer it at this time”
